The more normal life here gets – the less I remember to blog. I guess I think, what is so special or interesting about my life that anyone would care about since I just teach and do normal stuff, I just happen to be on the other side of the world. But, then I can’t accept the fact that there is nothing special about the way Jesus has been providing still – everyday. That is special and worth writing and sharing about his provision to give him the glory.
Since I last wrote I have completed my first 4th grade assembly, watched my first Christmas pageant, drank eggnog and watched Home Alone. I guess you could say things are “beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” well, in a Thailand sort of way. At Lotus (the Thai version of Super Walmart) all of the cashiers are wearing Santa hats and Matt Cameron and I even sang along to Frosty the Snowman as we walked past a life size statue of Santa. And, as I sit in my favorite coffee shop sipping on my 2nd cinnamon latte (they are $1 each ), the warm glow of the lights, gold tinsel and tree make the room feel so cozy that the fluorescent light on the street outside makes it almost look like it is cold and snowy out there. Far from the truth as I wore my Chacos and short sleeve shirt on my motorbike here, but there is a feeling of Christmas that you just can’t lose I guess – no matter where you are. Poinsettias are ever present as well, as they are also $1 per plant. My Christmas eve scent candle that my mom sent me also gives the illusion of Christmas.
I was blessed to remember the real meaning of Christmas today as I read a picture book to my class about Jesus and his gift to us. It’s amazing how you can get caught up in things and forget that He came to this earth as a sweet, precious baby to die for me. It was such a treasure to read the story to my kids and hear the kids ask questions like, “did Jesus have brothers and sisters?” or “Why did Herod want to kill Jesus?” I forget the impact of my words, and how heavy words from a teacher’s mouth fall on these kids’ hearts. Also the nativity scene my grandma sent me – which is AMAZING – a 3d detailed pop-up book from famous paintings – has brought questions to my class. Only those questions are, “Why doesn’t Jesus have a blanket covering his privates?” I guess any questions are good about Jesus – right?
Jesus has been so good in taking care of me still. The other day before my class had to perform their assembly in front of the whole school – I was slightly stressed out. Stressed out enough to call home crying, thinking that they were going to revoke my job it was going to be such a disaster. Jesus of course made that the day that I get a silly card in the mail that my dad picked, and a Christmas package waiting for me in the office. He even knows a head of time what days are going to be more homesick than others – and times those packages just right. And all in all – he took care of the assembly too, it went as good as it could go, thanks to his grace.
Thank you for your Christmas cards and e-mails, you really have no idea how much it means to be to get something special in the mail… I have become the envy of my colleagues. And I will have to attach a picture of the adorable kindergarten student who wore a suit, tie and Velcro shoes to the Christmas pageant – he was precious.
